Removing Our Veils of Separation

Christ has no body but yours,
No hands, no feet on earth but yours,
Yours are the eyes with which he looks
Compassion on this world,
Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good,
Yours are the hands, with which he blesses all the world.
Yours are the hands, yours are the feet,
Yours are the eyes, you are his body.
Christ has no body now but yours,
No hands, no feet on earth but yours,
Yours are the eyes with which he looks
compassion on this world.
Christ has no body now on earth but yours.

~Teresa of Avila

I study widely from wisdom writings, and from the spiritual writings of the church past and present. What distresses me, and with myself also, is when we’re speaking, or living out of one, two, or even three separations from God. The fact is, we all do it. It’s a part of our fallen nature to hide.

Now before I say this, please get that I’m not attacking Scripture, but even Scripture can be used as a separation and a defense against the Presence of God. Jesus himself says, (notice the present tense here), “You search the Scriptures because you think they give you eternal life. But the Scriptures point to me!”  Note: It’s Presence that matters, and eternal life is always in the present. Nail that with your life in Jesus. Be present. Lift and remove the veils of our past and future that separate us from being with God here and now. Remove the veils of our religious forms that keep us occupied and not present or available to enter in.

We can be speaking or writing the absolute truth, but because of our separation from God, our words are lifeless, mere echoes of the reality they could hold. I believe this is one reason Jesus says, “It is the Spirit that gives life. Human effort accomplishes nothing. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life.”

We have such potential as Believers, to break through the barriers, and tear down the walls of separation between us and God so that our lives radiate deeply with the power and the Presence of God. I’m speaking of more than a mere rush into and out of the Presence of God in a service.

I’m speaking of  that quiet deep abiding in Christ…quietly listening to his every breath and word…his nudge to engage and to retreat with him. It’s an ebb and flow, this spiritual life…to breathe in the atmosphere of the Holy Spirit with every breath, like the great oak tree breathes in and releases life-giving oxygen into the atmosphere. I’m speaking of emanation more than imitation here.

I challenge you, right now to begin removing your veils of separation between you and God. Join with me daily to clean out the springs of our lives and let our eternal life flow.

It all begins with our quite time, and with resting, ie abiding in the vine. Be a fruitful vine. Be an oak of eternal life. Be that refreshing stream of living water. Enter into your wholeness in being and in becoming.

Let’s come in from the cold and remove our veils of separation.
